NEH Summer of Learning
Modes of Rewriting:
From the NEH National Academy teachers read the classics from Aristotle to Cicero to Hobbs, delving into the depths of the text by recasting in separate modes of writing that are substantially different and interesting. The chance to be makers, not just doers, allows you to interpret at a meaningful level.
Select three modes of rewriting your favorite passages:
1. Abstract: rewrite the text in shorter form, with precis, substantive, condensation.
2. Sound Bites: Turn the text into a series of catchy slogans.
3. The Wide World in Six Words- Beginning, Middle, and End in Sixes...Standing at the Border of Order: Re-write the selected text in nine six-word statements. Check out Hemingway's "six-worder" story link.
4. Genre Shift: Rewrite as a poem, parable, narrative, allegory, etc.
5. News Story: Using a journalistic approach answer Who, What, Where, When, Where, How, and Why, with a lead from most important info to least.
6. Visualization: illuminate, colorize...see the samples of work on the link to the right.
I await the opportunity to see your creative endeavors.
