Dear GT and Enrichment Parents/Guardians,
As students transition to middle school, the GATE staff would like to recap and clarify for you student eligibility for Tier 3—G/T and Tier 2—Enrichment services. A district-wide assessment using the Cognitive Abilities Test, also known as the CogAT, is given in the spring to all 2nd graders. Tier 3 GT students are those with cognitive, achievement, and performance scores consistently at or above the 95th percentile in one or more areas of the CogAT test.
The CogAT test evaluates verbal and non-verbal skills, quantitative, and problem solving abilities. Those identified, as G/T Tier 3 will have a teacher/parent signed Advanced Learning Plan (ALP) outlining academic and affective goals for the school year. Additional data that G/T teachers share include TCAP and classroom performance recommendations, which is helpful for those Tier 2 advanced students not on an ALP.
Often parents and students entering middle school ask about the difference between G/T Tier 3, and Advanced Tier 2 services. Tier 2 students are those approaching the 95% percentile on the CogAT and other data points. These students often participate in the enrichment/GT classes at the elementary level and will have advanced opportunities at the middle school but will not have an ALP as Tier 3 students.
Visit the following Gifted and Talented Services website for additional clarification. Know that the Weldre4 G/T staff strives to meet and exceed statewide mandates. http://weldre4.sharpschool.net/learning_services/gifted_and_talented_services/
Please contact us with any questions or concerns regarding eligibility for enrichment/gifted and talented opportunities. Plan to attend upcoming parent nights held at the middle schools for additional information from administrators.
Sincerely,
Ms. Brunner & GATE Staff
